Cemetery
How can I request a correction to a cemetery record?
Contact City Hall at (785) 325-2284 or visit our Contact Us page.
Can I plant flowers/trees/shrubs in the cemetery?
Some items are prohibited from being planted/installed in the cemetery. Please contact City Hall at 785-325-2284 PRIOR to planting or installing any permanent plants/fixtures in the City of Washington Cemetery.
Library
How long does it take to get a library card?
Our librarian will be able to supply you with a new library card the same day you apply. Must provide a photo ID and proof of residence.
Are electronic books available?
Yes. Our library has a partnership with Sunflower eLibrary. Inquire at library for more information.
Does the Library have Story Time?
We do offer "story time" and summer reading programs for younger children. Check out the library for the next scheduled session.
City Hall
What hours is City Hall open?
City Hall is open from 8am - 5pm Monday - Friday, excluding holidays.
Municipal Code
May I burn trash and leaves inside the city limits?
No, however, you may obtain a permit for a portable outdoor fireplace. Please contact city hall if you have any questions.
Does City of Washington have a leash law?
Yes. According to Chapter 2 of the Code of the City of Washington, Kansas, it shall be unlawful for the owner of any dog/cat to permit such dog/cat to run at large within the corporate limits of the city at anytime. "At Large" is defined as: Any dog/cat shall be deemed to be at large when it is off the premises occupied by the owner’s household as their abode and when not accompanied by its owner on a leash.
Can I drive my Golf Cart, ATV, or Work Site Utility Vehicle in the City of Washington?
Yes. The City of Washington has adopted an ordinance which allows them to be driven in town, provided all rules are followed and an annual permit is obtained per City Code.

Where can I pay my municipal court citation?
Payments may be made at City of Washington City Hall, 301 C Street, PO Box 296, Washington, KS.
You may also call and make a payment over the phone (services fees may apply).
Animals

How do I establish a utility account?
You must complete an application for utility services, provide proof of identification, and pay the current applicable deposit ($150.00 per electric meter and $50 per water meter), plus a $25 connect fee. This may be completed at City Hall during business hours.
Trash & Recycling
When are the garbage collection days for my street?
Please contact your refuse/trash hauler for their schedule.
Where can I dispose of paint, chemicals, or other hazardous materials?
Please contact Washington County Solid Waste at 785-325-2271 for details and information related to hazardous materials and waste.
Water & Wastewater Utilities
How could I have used this much water?
You may not have - the numbers on your meter may have been transposed or hard to read. You could possibly have a leaky toilet or faucet that's difficult to detect. Just call City Hall and we'll work with you to solve the problem.
My bill is past due can I get an extension?
The City of Washington has a policy regarding utility payment extensions. Call City Hall for more information.
What do I do if I am experiencing low pressure?
Check your meter and the surrounding area for possible leaks. Next, call City Hall and report low pressure for your area.
Why do I have a previous balance when I know I sent in my payment?
We may have received it after the due date, or after the next bill was printed, or we may not have received it at all. Call City Hall for assistance.
Why is my water discolored?
A repair could have been completed recently allowing air to enter the line, causing the milky look. If you have questions, please call City Hall at 785-325-2284.

Where do I go to vote?
All City elections are conducted by the Washington County Clerk at the Washington County Courthouse, 214 C Street. You may register to vote at the Washington County Courthouse, or at City Hall.
Where do I renew/change my driver's license or renew/purchase vehicle tags.?
You may update your drivers' license at the Washington County Courthouse, 214 C Street, Washington, KS. You can reach them at 785-325-2461.
